Birthdays and Unexpected Blessings

Today is a day of happiness, but also a time to reflect on past sorrows.

Four years ago I was going through one of the toughest periods I had ever experienced.

We made the decision after a year of earnest prayer to close our business in North Carolina and move our family to the hubs' hometown in Iowa.  His mother was not doing well, his Dad was aging, the family farm was falling into shambles...  and we felt increasingly lead to make this huge leap of faith.

We knew it would be hard to start a business over from scratch, especially in an area where there really aren't a lot of trees and where a lot of the hardworking people take care of things themselves.  We didn't know how hard.  Six months later found us completely devoid of our savings, living in a single wide trailer on the family farm, and doing everything possible to try to keep it all together - and food in our bellies.

And then I got a phone call one early Monday morning, February 5, 2007 that put it all into perspective.

My father had been killed while attempting to board a ship 2 miles off the coast of Delaware, at the mouth of the Delaware Bay.  He fell 30 feet into the water where he was run through the propellers of the very boat that had taken him out to meet the ship.  The only thing they ever found was his float coat wrapped around the propellers of the pilot boat.  My world tilted on its axis, as I stared into a mirror trying to comprehend what my mother was telling me.

Funny how when something like that happens, you realize that nothing else matters.  Not money.  Not what you have.  Not where you live.  Not what you drive.  Nothing.  How insignificant are the trappings of this earth.  And you wonder how you'll ever be the same again.  And really, you never are.

The day my daddy died, was the first day of my time of the month.  A month later I was late.  I thought it was stress and didn't say anything to anyone.  Not to my mother.  Not to Scott.  No one.  After a week and a half passed, I closed myself up in the bathroom in my Dad's house in Virginia Beach with a test.  And when I got the results, I cried.  Sobbed, actually.  I couldn't handle losing my Dad, settling the estate, our current financial situation, and now, a baby on the way.  When Scott came to the door to ask if I was okay, I opened the door enough to throw the pregnancy test at him and slam the door.  Then I cried some more.  And raged against God.  Hadn't we gone where he led us?  Wasn't it enough that He had taken everything we had and then when we were at our lowest, my father?  Now, a baby when we couldn't even support the ones we had?  I felt like Job of the Old Testament.  Why?!

Fast forward to November.  I'm heavily pregnant, nearing the end of my 40 weeks.  I had petitioned the courts to have my father declared deceased.  I had spent many weeks on the road between Virginia and Iowa settling the estate.  And life was still going on, when I couldn't have imagined it ever would.  And I still wasn't ready to take on another child.  I dreaded giving birth.

November 6th, 2007.

I'm in labor.  I have a picture of my Dad on the bed, as I brought this new little life into the world.  Not ready for late night feedings, walking the floor with a crying baby, and still managing to take care of five other children while still struggling with my grief.

The moment he was born, my little man has been the easiest of all my six children.  I chatted away with Scott and my sister-in-law, as he crowned - not even realizing it.  A half push and he slipped into the world - and into my heart.  As I looked into his eyes and counted his little fingers and toes, I realized he was the spitting image of my father as a baby - down to a little curl on his forehead, a birthmark on his chest.  And in his eyes was the knowledge of an old soul...  If you believe in that kind of thing.  Which, I have never have.

When the nurses brought around the complimentary quilts that a local organization makes for new babies, amid the pastel pinks and flowers, the bright primary colors depicting tractors and farm animals, a bright blue caught my eye.  A quilt of sailboats and ships - in Iowa of all places.  And my eyes filled with tears when I thought about the woman that had made this quilt.  Did she know when she picked the fabric that the Lord was guiding her hands and her heart?  I think it was then that my heart began to thaw towards God.

I never walked the floor with him screaming.  He woke up minimally to eat and always went right back to sleep.  He was satisfied in my arms, in the swing, or in the bouncy seat.  You couldn't have asked for a better baby.  And time began to heal my hurt...  With the snuggles of my beautiful boy.  With the powdery scent of baby.  With the unconditional love he had for me.  How many hours did I spend just sitting looking into his eyes.

We named him for my father.  A big name for a little baby.  And even bigger shoes to fill.

When my mother first saw Landon 8 months later, my brother tried to prepare her for how much he resembled our father.  And she still gasped and burst into tears when she saw him.  Not one of us could believe it.  A gift in the midst of unspeakable sorrow.

So today we celebrate Landon's 4th birthday. It has been 4 years, 40 weeks, and 2 days since my Daddy died.  And its also been 4 years, 40 weeks, and 2 days since a tiny baby was sent to heal our hurts, when we weren't sure we'd ever see our way out of the darkness.  And isn't that the Lord's way?  A tiny baby sent to save the world so many, many years ago.  And a tiny baby sent to fill the gaping hole in our hearts.  And he has.

Everyday he still continues to fill our hearts and our home.

Each year on this day, I am reminded that sometimes unexpected blessings come when you least expect them and that sometimes, when you might rail against the hand that you have been dealt, that there is Someone who knows better than you do.  He knows what you need and He will give you comfort when you need it - even when its not in a way you expect or maybe even want.  Today there have already been some tears while I reflect on the circumstances of Landon's birth, but there is also an incredible happiness that we have been so very, very blessed.

So, happy birthday, my little man.  You are still filling my days with happiness and laughter - with your sunny smiles, while I marvel at your innocence and your happy go lucky nature. And I thought for sure you would be tainted by my horrible sadness and bitterness as I carried you in my womb.  You are my light.  You are my heart.

Happy Birthday, Landon.
We love you.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future."

Friday's Finds... #08

Who says you can't have a shopping spree at a thrift store?  Oh yeah you can!  And I did.  Oh, yes.  I did.

I really didn't mean to.  I didn't go there with that intention, especially with what I bought last weekend in The Dells and Prairie Du Chien, but there was just so much goodness that I saw potential to remake.  Note to self:  Never get the shopping cart.  Ever.

Last week, I talked about possibly doing a linky party for my Friday's Finds, if I could ever figure out how to do it.  And yesterday on my Facebook Page I said I was going to do it.  Well, I can't.  I have no clue what I'm doing wrong, but the code won't paste and when I hand type it in, it doesn't work.  I'm doing everything right:  Made the code, pasting it in in the Edit HTML tab...  Still nada.  :(  I've been trying all morning and its still not working.  GRRRRRRR!  How frustrating!  If anyone can be of any help, please e-mail and help a sista out!

Okay, moving on...  MY Friday's Finds:

$1.50 for these two beauties that will soon be getting some spray paint lovin'.

Another little grapevine wreath for $1.00 plus an old patio stone that was my Dad's that I found out in the pump house.  Crocheted table runner:  $7.50

Gold picture frame given a face-life with some white spray paint.  $0.50
Yep, that's me circa 1979.  Olan Mills at its finest.  :)

Platter:  $2.00

So I got bit by the Christmas bug -Well that, and our basement flooded year before last and I lost 11 years worth of Christmas decorations.  I was heartsick.  At least I have a good excuse to buy more.  All are getting a good dose of paint.
Angel:  $2.50
Metal Start:  $1.00
Wood Candles:  $2.00
Lighted Glass Block:  (Needs a new ribbon to be more "my style") $5.00

Metal Sleigh is going Silver or White:  $15.00

Heavy Wooden Frame.  The painting has GOT to go.
$5.00

Mirror Window Frame: $5.00
Getting some paint and distressing/Mirror is getting aged.

Craft Goodies:  $0.50 each
And I've already done this with the string:

And someone's cast off ornaments are the exact look I'm going for on my tree this year...

And MY favorite find:

Vintage Chair:  $27.50
Foot stool:  $7.50
And that's one of our kitties, Lucy, taking a nap.

And I get to try my hand at reupholstering.  Wish me luck!
And the stool?  Yeah.  Pleather.  Lovely.  Recovering that one too.
With some shabby paint, they're going to look FAB!
And as it turns out, its already become a reading nook for the kids.  Awesome!  (Gotta love the dirty socks  LOL!)

Oops!  Forgot a find!  Bottom right corner with my shell collection:
Metal Pail - $10.00
And obviously I'm still working on sanding my barnwood coffee table I found on Craigslist two months ago for $15.00.  Getting the purple off is a PAIN!
Think I'm going to be ordering some ASCP post haste!  ;)

Okay...  WHEW!  Quite a haul, huh?  I would have loved to have seen your finds, but blogger must hate me.  :P  If anyone could help me figure out how to host a linky party, I'd really, really appreciate it!

Have a super weekend, y'all!

Its All About Family

Sorry for being so late today y'all, but I got a little sidetracked with a delightful long distance phone call with Nicole @ Davis Domestications and Furniture Face-Lifts.  If you haven't checked out her blog, you need to!  Nicole is absolutely wonderful and I had an awesome time talking to her - and picking her brain of all her furniture painting knowledge.  Thanks, Nicole!

So, yesterday was a whirl-wind of rearranging my living room to the detriment of every other room of my house and finishing up a project that I gave you a sneak peek of at Our Prairie Home on Facebook on Tuesday.  Its amazing how once you get started, how you get on a roll.  Its the getting started part that's the problem.  ;)

Anyhoo...

If you missed it, this is what I started with (some of which changed as the project developed and took me another route, as it so often does):

Paper Mache Letters (50% off HOLLA!)
Scrapbook Paper
Old Book Pages
Mod Podge
Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer
Spanish Moss
Glue Gun
Spray Primer
Dutch Boy Paint in "Chalk White"
Pittsburgh Paint in "Tall Cattail"
Acrylic Folk Art Craft Paint in "Driftwood"
Technique Glaze
Craft/Purdy Paint Brushes
Scrapbook Applique Flowers
and a few odds and ends from around the house.

Most of the supplies I just had laying around from other projects, so the cost was little.  Aren't those the best kind?!

I initially got my idea from Kelli @ Restore Interiors.  She made a sign for the wall in her booth at Urban Suburban that I absolutely adored!  And of course I thought, I can do that!

Restore Interiors

So, when I suckered the hubs into stopping in at Hobby Lobby while we were in Waterloo last Friday, I got the makings for my own.  It took me a while to figure out what word I wanted to use.  Time and time again, I kept coming back to "Family".  Because as a SAHM, that's what's most important to me.

After working on and off on it for the last couple of days, I finally finished it up last night.  I looked at it up on the wall and realized that just hanging the letters up there wasn't going to work.  What to do?

Well, I just happened to have an old unfinished wood door to the hubs and I's chest of drawers upstairs that had fallen off due to the little man using it as a swing (Does this kind of stuff happen in your house too?  Please tell me it does!) and it wasn't repairable.  He ripped the hinge clean out and splintered the wood on one corner.  I decided to replace both sides with curtains, so I just had these two doors laying around up in the attic.

So at about 10:30 last night, I decided to sand it lightly, primer it, paint it with a sample of "Fairytale" blue by True Value Color Made Simple that I got for $1.25, distress it, and glaze it.  Thus my reason for being up until 2 am.  LOL!  I don't have any befores of the door, because the light was terrible for taking pictures since it was dark.  When I hot glued the letters to it this morning, I realized it was a fantastic idea!  And I completely love how it turned out!

You wanna see it don't you?

You want me to shut up and post the pictures, right?

LOL!

Okay!  Okay!  Here it is:

For some reason,
a few of the paper rosettes look a different color only in the pictures.
Drives me nuts, but I couldn't figure out how to fix it.
It doesn't look like that when you're looking at it.

Total Cost of Project:  $11.00

And for once, since I was rearranging my living room, it actually has a home on my wall instead of being stuck in a corner somewhere after I stage it.  LOL!

As you can see, I've done a TON of rearranging!  The buffet and rocking chair are now at home in the living room, as is the ladder.  We'll save that reveal for another day, but I've already taken pictures since who know's how long it'll stay in immaculate condition!  LOL  Since I've moved everything around,  I now have more space to buy more furniture for the dining room and office.  HA HA HA!  See, there is a method to my madness!  Are you wondering what's behind those pocket doors?  Let me tell ya, you don't even want to think about seeing what's behind Door #2.  The dining room is in a shambles - which, lucky me, I get to work on today.  I get the booby prize!  :P

Here's hoping y'all have an awesome day!

Family Picture Proofs Are In!

I gotta tell ya...  I have never laughed so hard in my life.  Tears, peeps.  Tears!  I was literally howling with laughter (and snorting a little too) over some of the shots that Donna took.  In an attempt to get at least one good picture when we were losing the little man to the crankies, she fired off about 35 shots one right after the other and the result was a hilarious play-by-play.  I wasn't laughing then, but I sure did laugh Sunday night when I had a chance to sit down and look at the proofs.  The different facial expressions are priceless.  LMBO!  In fact, I may buy a few to to put out at their graduation parties.  LOL!!!

However, we (or I should say, Donna) did get such fantastic pictures that a few I just shook my head over their awesomeness.  All in all, my kiddos did fabulous!

We still haven't narrowed it down to which family shot we want.  The hubs is partial to this one:

While I'm drawn to these two:

And of course you've already seen this one of the hubba-hubba hubs and me...

But these ones of the children, just blew me away...

And I'm even thinking of getting this one, just because its a "In The Moment" shot:

Its like the diva is just shaking her head over her brothers' antics.  LOL!

And this one with Daddy and his little girl...

LOVE!

So, these are the ones I've narrowed it down to choosing.  The plan is to get them all in one size or another and then do a family photo wall.  You're probably going to be seeing A LOT of posts about the frames I'm finding.  LOL!

But here's where I want your opinion...

Should I have them all in color OR should I order them in the Enhanced Contrast that the 1st picture is in OR would you order a mix of both????

AND

Which ones would you use to go on our Christmas card this year?

AND ONE MORE THING...

I'm totally stumped on the wording this year.  I want something original and cute, but I'm just not getting it.  Please give me some ideas because I'm completely stumped!

Please weigh in with your opinions!  :)

**  I shouldn't have to say this, but I will anyway:

ALL PICTURES ARE COPYRIGHTED BY BUSCH PHOTOGRAPHY.  PLEASE DO NOT REPRODUCE OR COPY THESE IN ANY WAY.  Thank you.

Have a super day, y'all - and if you live anywhere in Iowa:  Stay warm and stay dry!  ;)

Wisconsin is "Da Bomb!" for Antiquing

I hope everyone's children had an AWESOME Halloween.  I know that my crew did.  Greyson and Ian were "too cool" to dress up and I did manage to talk Noah into at least painting his face.  But Eva and Landon had a blast and got such a haul that they had me tote their buckets.  LOL  We're going to be eating Halloween Candy until Easter!  ;)

Here's a few pics of them in action:

Poor Little Man.  His momma doesn't sew and couldn't find a single plain blue sweatshirt/sweatpants set so she could hot glue light blue felt patches on his costume.  So, he was a "Puppy in Pajamas".  LOL!  His mother feels like a failure when she she's all these way cool costume craftier mothers have made.  :P

The diva was a "Rockstar Cowgirl".  With her curled ponytails
and make-up, so totally rocked the look.  ;)

Okay...  So that's all for our Halloween.  YAY!  Now on to Thanksgiving.  LOVE this time of year!  But you came to hear all about my finds in Wisconsin.  Without further ado...

I wish I had a million dollars.  No, wait.  I probably don't because if I did, I would have spent it all this last weekend.  No kidding!

While the boys were in the condo screaming vulgarities at our losing Iowa team, I snuck off for some much needed "Me" Time.  Browsing through the local attractions section of our hotel binder, I came across a place that seemed worth checking out:  Wisconsin Dells Antique and Craft Mall.  YES!  A quick phone call for directions, a speedy shower, and I was on my way.

Note to the ladies giving directions to the mall from Wilderness Resorts:

1)  When you turn onto Hwy 12 from the resort, your car's compass does not read East.  It reads North and South.  Luckily I guessed correctly and the road eventually curved to the east.  That is one thing that is different from the east coast and the midwest.  Directions given on the east coast:  Take a left out of the resort road onto Hwy 12.  Go to exit 212 and take another right at the bottom of the exit and then an immediate right on the roundabout.  Go to your next intersection and take a right, go under the overpass and we'll be on your left.  See?  Easy.  This head east for so many miles, then go north, blah, blah, blah...  Yeah.  I don't have the ocean immediately to my east, so how am I supposed to know which way is east???  LOL!!!

2)  Don't tell people to head toward Baraboo.  I'm not from Wisconsin and I don't know what a Baraboo is.  It could be some weird kind of animal or it could be a town.  Visitors won't know the difference.

3)  When you say to take a right at the end of the Exit 212, please inform the blond you're giving directions to that there is a roundabout at the intersection, so you need to hang at right and then an additional right.  It is not a right and then go further down and take another right.  Its a right, then take your immediate right, and then you go further down to take another right.

4)  Please take into consideration that you speak with a strong Wisconsin accent.  "Lou" and "Moon" sound exactly alike.  It took me a little while to figure out I was looking for Moon Road and not "Lou Road".  Yeesh!

To the State of Wisconsin:

1)  And the point of a roundabout iiiiiisssssss?????????

So, when I finally found my way to the mall, which really was pretty simple to find once I figured out my direction, where I needed to turn, and what road I was looking for...  Errrrr....  I was in for a treat!  Stalls and stalls and more stalls of antique vendors all under one roof.  Some were pretty pricey and some were reasonable.  Luckily, I only took $100 from the hubs because I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to get.  I could have very easily cleaned him out of cash had he given me any more than that.

How I loved looking at other people's finds!  But I also discovered that its no fun looking at stuff that others have already found.  The hunt for something neat or stumbling across something in an unexpected spot is the best part of acquiring things.  However, I didn't let that deter me from purchasing stuff.  LOL!

The first thing I found was a couple of blue Ball jars that caught my eye.  Boring and not really rare I know, but now I'm up to 4.  I do love their color.  $8.00 and $5.50 respectively.

Then I grabbed a couple of vintage books for $4.00 each.  I was drawn to their colors.

And who ever has too many wire baskets?  $29.00 was a little pricey, but I needed something to carry my loot, so that was my justification.  LOL!

And then I started browsing through old pictures and for some reason this one caught my attention and held it:

I think that this era was so beautiful.  Or maybe its just all the white.  LOL

Before I completely spent all of my money, I checked out and moseyed on over to the craft mall.

I came across these for $6.00...

and had a really hard time choosing just one.  If you know me in real life, you know that this totally true!  LOL

And then I totally fell in love with the entire section this was in...

And just had to narrow it down to this for $24.00.  She had an aqua cabinet with glass front doors that I drooled over.  Why no pictures?  Yeah.  About that...  I was in such a rush to get there, I forgot my camera.  And my cell phone died.  Sorry!

Since I didn't want to go back to the hotel without any money left.  I decided to call it quits.  LOL!

My patience was rewarded when stopped in Prairie Du Chien and I was able to run in to a little "Junque" Store where I got this awesome old bottle box for $10.00:

And I freaked when I saw this for $5.00:

I had one exactly like this that was my mom and dad's, but one of the kids took it outside to play in the snow, forgot it, and it got run over when the hubs was plowing the driveway.  I cried when I saw it.  My mom had had it forever.  Needless to say, it could have been $20 and I would have bought it.

So, I didn't go completely nuts even though I wanted to, but I still found several great things.  Although I do like nosing around in thrift stores a lot more, I like the idea that for years from now I'll be able to remember this trip whenever I look at these items.  Because now they're not simply things, they're memories.

Have a fantastic day, y'all!
